Austin Bowley was born in Bristol, Tennessee, but has lived most of his life in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated from Davidson College cum laude with a major in music and a minor in environmental studies. In college, Austin played in several college bands and sang in Davidson’s all-male a cappella group. Austin hopes to pursue another degree in either music or non-profit management after his time with Impact.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
My proudest accomplishment is the completion of the first act of my musical, a college project I am continuing to work on with my college friend Ed Pritchard. The musical involves a family of Californian farmers, a villainous duo of a penguin and a panda, and a six-foot English hedgehog named George. Ed and I hope to finish the rest of the musical in the next few years and get it produced someday! Of course, our mission is to do so sustainably, so we have a lot more to think about as far the production of musical is concerned.

What is your favorite quote from a book, film, or song?
“I want to change the world, instead I sleep.” – Ingrid Michaelson

While this quote comes off initially as an endorsement of a skeptical view on an individual’s power to right the wrongs of the world, to me it captures the hopelessness we all feel. It is easy to sleep instead of acting, and we all sometimes choose to sleep instead. But we shouldn’t feel guilty because we all also need to take care of ourselves, especially when we are most vulnerable and hopeless. When we feel powerless, sometimes all we can do, Ingrid continues to sing, is “keep breathing,” keep living, until we are ready to fight again.
