The FocusFirst Screening Process

FocusFirst works with childcare-center directors to select convenient dates and times for vision screenings. Typically, our screenings last under an hour, and we send results to you in a couple of weeks. Our partner organization, Sight Savers America, will follow up with the families of children who failed the screening to assist them in obtaining appropriate vision care. All of this will be provided at no cost to you or the families your center serves!

Each year, poor eyesight adversely affects approximately 1 in 10 children under age 6 across the United States. While vision screenings are most effective during the preschool years, when early treatment of many conditions can prevent irreversible vision damage or loss, only 21 percent of preschool children receive comprehensive vision screenings.

How It Works

FocusFirst visits all types of child-care centers in rural and urban areas of our service states. We provide screenings at churches and private daycare centers, schools, Head Start centers, home-based centers, health fairs, and others!

On the morning of your center’s screening, we will arrive a few minutes early to set up. Our screeners will work with you to find a good space for the screening – typically a spare room or other space where it can be darkened enough to allow the children’s eyes to dilate naturally. The screener will begin screening the children with our Spot camera, a high-tech screening device that can detect a wide range of vision problems in just a few seconds.

Our partner organization, Sight Savers America, will follow up with the families of the children who failed the screening to assist them in getting vision care for their children.

FocusFirst does not bill Medicaid and will not distribute any of your information, except to Sight Savers America, which will only use your information to follow up regarding a child’s vision care.
