Summary: The SpeakFirst Team Lead supports the development and implementation of the SpeakFirst debate program with a focus on partnership development, research, and planning, laying the groundwork for the expansion of SpeakFirst, while also serving with current Impact America initiatives in the region. SpeakFirst is an academic debate program for talented high school students.

The SpeakFirst Team Lead is a full-time AmeriCorps Member serving 1700 hours (1 year).

Location: Position available in Memphis, TN 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Build relationships and develop partnerships with and within local school systems, education/youth-focused organizations, and other extracurricular service providers
  • Conduct needs assessment in the local area, including inventory of existing debate programs, other academic extracurricular opportunities, etc.
  • Learn about the debate circuit in their city by reaching out to existing programs, attend practices, determine what access to nearby tournaments is like, determine what kind of support is given by nearby colleges, etc.
  • Collaborate with Regional Director, Program Manager, and SpeakFirst Director to develop a plan for services in 2021-22
  • Plan and execute process for recruitment/selection of debate team members for 2021-22 program year
  • Develop and teach a summer debate orientation for 2021-22 participants
  • Updates region-specific team leader playbook throughout the service year
  • Provide service with Impact America’s FocusFirst vision screening initiative (approximately 2 days per week during fall and spring screening season). FocusFirst responsibilities include:
    • Receive training to understand how to effectively conduct vision screenings using photoscreening cameras
    • Conduct vision screenings at Head Starts, daycares, Pre-K programs, and other child care centers
    • Lead college student volunteers on vision screenings
    • Assist with vision screening scheduling, logistics, processing, and quality review of results
  • Provide service with Impact America’s SaveFirst tax preparation initiative (approximately 2 days per week during SaveFirst tax season):
    • Obtain Advanced Level IRS certification for volunteer tax preparers
    • Assist with marketing efforts
    • Prepare returns at tax sites and assist in managing volunteer service at tax sites

Supervisor: Program Manager

Term of Service: Begins July 1st, 2020 and ends June 30th, 2021

Academic Qualifications:  Members must have completed a college degree or have plans to complete the degree within the first six months of the term of service (this exception may be made on a case-by-case basis with prior approval).

Service Conditions and Time Requirement:  This position may include an irregular schedule and seasonal shifts in workload. It sometimes requires weekend, evening, early morning, and off-peak hours. Work will involve conducting direct service in communities of need, outside of an office setting as well as sedentary physical activity requiring sitting for periods of time. 50% or more time is spent looking directly at a computer. Some travel is required.
